Course Content
The course is divided into lectures and seminars and is divided into two parts (A and B, 6 credits each, Module A mutual teaching of Sources for the History of Art course in LM Library and Archival Sciences ).
Module A: The birth of an illuminated manuscript: the evolution of the relationship between text and image, text types, the miniaturists and their work.
Module B: Some cases of patronage compared: monastic, conventual and private libraries.
During the second part of the course instruction will be supplemented by practical seminars related to the exhibitions on franciscan patronage and on the library of the Santa Croce (Florence) provided by March 2015 respectively at the Galleria dell'Accademia and the Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana.
The educational activities of both modules will be held with the support of specimens stored at the Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies at Villa I Tatti (Biblioteca Berenson).

• From Scroll to Codex: evolution of the relationship between text and image between V and XV century: the papyrus style, narrative cycles of Homer and Virgil, the initial decorated, the frontispiece
• The illuminator and his method of work
• Evolution of the social role of the illuminator: Signatures and inscriptions
• Relationship between the miniature and the language of the monumental arts: the spread of the language Giotto in the fourteenth century.
• Tools for the study of the history of miniature: manuscript, print and online catalogues.
