Course Content
The course aims to address the analysis of Italian poetry of the sixties and seventies in comparison with historical reality, through exemplary authors and works (Pasolini, "i Novissimi", Luzi, Montale).

During the course the following works will be analyzed: P. P. Pasolini, "Poesia in forma di rosa" (1964); Giuliani, Sanguineti, Porta, Pagliarani, Balestrini, "I Novissimi. Poesie per gli anni 60" (1961); M. Luzi, "Nel Magma" (1963); E. Montale, "Satura" (1971). For a panorama of Italian poetry of the twentieth century, the study of the following volume is recommended: Niva Lorenzini, La poesia italiana del Novecento, Bologna, il Mulino, 2018. During the lessons, critical in-depth materials relating to individual authors and works will be provided treated, as well as theoretical texts, interviews and films of the authors taken into consideration. Each student is also required to choose two novels from the period 1950-1970, with relative critical study and individual bibliographic research.

The course of 6 credits is limited to the study of Pasolini and the "Novissimi" with the help of the volume of Niva Lorenzini (Italian poetry of the twentieth century, Bologna, il Mulino, 2018) and the supplementary materials indicated in class. Each student is also required to choose a novel from the period 1950-1970, with relative critical study and individual bibliographic research.
Learning Objectives
Aims of the course:
a. to introduce students to different literary genres;
b. to familiarize students with the critical instruments required for the analysis of literary texts;
c. to enable students to develop a critical consciousness and an awareness of critical theory and culture theory through detailed analyses of some the most representative texts of italian contemporary literature.
1. Knowledge and understanding: Students will demonstrate knowledge and understanding in historical and cultural contexts of Twenty century and will acquire the critical tools to cope with the formal and substantive components of the literary texts analyzed during the lessons.
2. Applying knowledge and understanding: Students will learn how to apply processes, models, questions, and theories that result in enhanced clarity in the comprehension of literary texts included in the program, which will be appreciated in both their formal and their contextual features.
3. Making judgements: Students will develop the ability to discuss the literary questions considered during the course, proposing critical perspectives and well-grounded judgements on the texts included in the program.
4. Communication skills: Students will develop the ability to can communicate information, ideas, problems and solutions, with particular reference to themes and questions considered during the lessons.
5. Learning skills: Students will acquire the methodological tools needed to read, analyze and understand literary texts in their generic structures.
Prerequisites
General overview of the history, literary currents and main authors in the twentieth century in Italy.
Teaching Methods
Lectures referring to documents, works, texts, critical and theoretical essays analyzed during the course and listed in the bibliography
Type of Assessment
The acquired knowledge and competence will be tested during class and at the oral exam.
Oral exam: the examination focuses on three specific areas:
- knowledge of the creative texts of the authors taken into consideration during the course;
- knowledge of theoretical essays and critical essays taken into consideration during the course;
- knowledge of the literary, historical and cultural context taken into consideration during the course
It is mandatory to show proficiency in all three areas to pass the exam.
Students will demonstrate that they can discuss the subjects treated during the course, make appropriate connections between different authors and works, and express themselves clearly.
Grades are given on the basis of 30 points. Points are awarded if students are able to
1) describe form and contents of the texts studied,
2) understand, summarize and propose critical readings of those texts,
3) elaborate personal judgements that are solidly grounded on the text and/or secondary literature,
4) use appropriate terms.
Nos. 1 and 4 are essential in order to obtain the minimum passing grade (18/30); higher evaluations depend on to what extent’ students have developed their skills in all four points listed above.
