Learning Objectives
The course aims to offer the student an overall overview of the main themes of contemporary cataloging and metadata, the principles, standards, rules and languages that relate the collection and the reader; the functions and bibliographic services rendered to readers by the traditional and digital library.

Teaching Methods

During the lessons, opportunities to meet with experts and other teachers will be suggested, and participation in conferences on librarianship topics will be proposed, e.g.: 8-12 February 2021: The Bibliographic Control in the Digital Era.
Three meetings are scheduled (classroom via degli Alfani, 39 or remotely) on the basic aspects of online research for art history and archeology, and for library science, in collaboration with the Biblioteca Umanistica. Guided visits to libraries are planned, including: Humanities Library of the University of Florence, Crocetti Library, National Central Library of Florence.
Type of Assessment
Students have to take an oral exam and they are invited to write an essay (about 15,000 characters, including spaces), taking up a particular topic treated in class or inherent in the course, agreed with the professor.

Overview of international and Italian cataloging. Theoretical references. Universal bibliographic control in the digital ecosystem. FRBR, FRAD, FRSAD. The IFLA LRM conceptual model. RDA, Resource Description and Access, the metadata standard for the digital age. From record management to entity management. Examples of description and access to resources. The Italian text of RDA.
