Learning Objectives
The course intends to present the fundamental tools for research in the field of the history of the miniature, with particular reference to the relationship between text and image. In Module B, particular attention will be paid to the development of critical analysis skills of art-historical literature.

Teaching Methods
The lessons will take place in frontal and seminar mode during both modules. The lectures in Module A will concern the analysis and commentary of miniatures from the 13th to the 15th century. In Module B the students will be engaged in turn in the oral presentation of a critical text, from which the teacher's lesson and collective discussion will take their cue.

Type of Assessment
For both modules, the verification of learning is based on the evaluation of active participation in the discussion in the classroom and on the final interview. The latter will focus on the topics discussed in class, starting with comments on the images presented and discussed there.

The course is divided into two modules: History of the miniature A (18 September - 28 October 2023); History of the miniature B. (October 30-December 23, 2023). Module A borrows the teaching of Sources for the history of art from the degree course in Archival and library sciences. Students of the latter degree course who prefer to follow Module B and take the related exam can do so. Students of the degree course in Art History who intend to take a 6-credit exam can choose between Module A and Module B.
The contents of the course will be presented in lectures, accompanied by Power Point presentations. The exam program will be supplemented by readings intended to be analyzed independently by the students and which will be the subject of discussion during the final exam.

Module A
At the origins of the history of the miniature in Italy: collecting and antiquarian passion between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Archival research and the edition of sources. Between historical criticism and connoisseurship: the studies of Paolo D'Ancona, Adolfo Venturi and Pietro Toesca.
Questions of method: The decorated initial between the Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages in Otto Pacht's studies. The study of models for the archaeological reconstruction of the lost (Kurt Weitzmann) and for the construction of a classification system (E. B. Garrison). The miniature for the reconstruction of regional art schools in historical-artistic studies: Pietro Toesca and Roberto Longhi.
The illuminated book in the Middle Ages: the materials and the technique of illumination between sources and material evidence. Tools and lexicon for a correct codicological and formal description.
Places and methods of production and conservation: from monasteries to specialized workshops, libraries.
Text and image relationship in the various book types: the Bible from late antiquity to the Renaissance, books for the liturgy (Evangeliaries and Lectionaries, Sacramentary and Missal, Psalter, antiphonaries and Graduals), books for study (exegesis, law), the literature.

Boccaccio visualized
The title of the course refers to the research of the most important GB scholar of the last century, Vittore Branca, who dedicated seminal contributions to the depiction of subjects taken from the works of the Certaldo area, which merged into a repertoire which, still today, is the starting point for any further thoughts on this matter. The lessons will be dedicated to the analysis of the relationship between text and image in the fourteenth-century tradition of the works of Giovanni Boccaccio and to the identification of the Boccaccian themes selected by the client for the decoration of rooms and household objects from the end of the fourteenth century to the late fifteenth century.
The manuscript tradition of the works of Giovanni Boccaccio, Decameron in primis, but also Teseida, Ninfale fiesolano, Genealogiae deorum, is characterized by the presence of richly illustrated specimens contemporary or shortly after the death of the Certaldese in 1375. Drawings accompanies the specimen of the Decameron today in Paris (Bibliothéque National de France, Ital. 90), and the hypothesis that their author was Boccaccio himself had great fortune in the last century, first supported by Vittore Branca, curator of the most important modern edition of the works of the Certaldo native and pioneer, together with Millard Meiss, of studies on the visualization of Boccaccio's texts. Today this hypothesis is rejected by all, but the hand of the Certaldo native is confirmed by the witty characters who populate the autograph manuscript of the Decameron preserved in Berlin (Kupferstichkabinett, Hamilton 90) and there is numerous and varied evidence of Giovanni Boccaccio's familiarity with the world of visual arts. Through the reading, analysis and commentary in the classroom of the vast critical literature on this topic, we will try to retrace the critical debate from the 1950s to the present, identifying its most significant turning points and stimuli for future research.
Students will use the databases made available by the Ente Nazionale Giovanni Boccaccio [https://www.enteboccaccio.it/s/ente-boccaccio/page/home] for the preparation of the seminar activities and the final exam.
The course aims to raise awareness and prepare students for the cultural initiatives planned for the celebrations for the 650th anniversary of GB's death in 2025.

Drawings accompanies the specimen of the Decameron today in Paris (Bibliothéque National de France, Ital. 90), and the hypothesis that their author was Boccaccio himself had great fortune in the last century, first supported by Vittore Branca, curator of the most important modern edition of the works of the Certaldo native and pioneer, together with Millard Meiss, of studies on the visualization of Boccaccio's texts. Today this hypothesis is rejected by all, but the hand of the Certaldo native is confirmed by the witty characters who populate the autograph manuscript of the Decameron preserved in Berlin (Kupferstichkabinett, Hamilton 90) and there is numerous and varied evidence of Giovanni Boccaccio's familiarity with the world of visual arts. Through the reading, analysis and commentary in the classroom of the vast critical literature on this topic, we will try to retrace the critical debate from the 1950s to the present, identifying its most significant turning points and stimuli for future research.
Students will use the databases made available by the Ente Nazionale Giovanni Boccaccio [https://www.enteboccaccio.it/s/ente-boccaccio/page/home] for the preparation of the seminar activities and the final exam.
The course aims to raise awareness and prepare students for the cultural initiatives planned for the celebrations for the 650th anniversary of GB's death in 2025.
